Get yourself along to Brixton Splash Festival This Sunday!

Posted on by within London, Brixton

The Brixton Splash Festival pays tribute to Brixton and its multicultural community. Now in its ninth year, the festival is free and open from midday to 7pm on the first Sunday in August.

Every year there’s a main stage for up-and-coming artists – plus a chance for them to perform. Well-known performers such as Katy B have appeared here in the past. As well as this, there’s a craft market for entrepreneurs to sell their creations, as well as free arts workshops for young people and stalls selling Caribbean food. Every year, extra elements are added in a bid to broaden the festival’s appeal.

The idea of the festival is to welcome those who are new to Brixton and to also celebrate the Afro-Caribbean heritage which has defined the community since the Windrush generation arrived just after the Second World War. In 2012, an additional event was added to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Independence of Jamaica to the Festival for the elders – the Brixton Tea Dance, a recreation of the initial welcome for the early Windrush pioneers at Lambeth Town Hall in 1962.

Make sure you check this exciting and vibrant event out this Sunday. You won’t be disappointed!
