New Brixton brew celebrates the EU's Four Freedoms

Posted on by

A new beer which celebrates the European Single Market has been created by Brixton’s Clarkshaws Brewery after a group of pro-EU south Londoners turned to the brewery for help.

The independent brewery, located on Ridgway Road, have rustled up the ‘Four Freedoms Pale Ale’ in reference to the EU’s guiding principle of free movement of goods, capital, services and labour.

The beer, marketed as ‘a truly continental pale ale’, blends British and German hops. Members of Lambeth for Europe and European Movement in Wandsworth & Merton, two groups formed during the referendum campaign, wanted to create something which reflected the values of many people living in the boroughs.

As beer was a shared passion for the members, it was decided that a new brew should be created to celebrate all-things EU.

One of the founders of the Four Freedoms Pale Ale, Ben Austin, said: “After the fractious referendum campaign, I really felt we needed to do something positive that could cheer us all up and so we thought what better way to do this than making a beer with some close friends?”

“We’re really pleased with the finished product and looking forward to sharing our delicious brew with fellow pro-Europeans”.

The newly-created beer hit the market on 19th October 2018, and a launch party was held at the Whirled Cinema, not far from where the brewery is based. For more on this story,
