Brixton Rec to gain listed status?

A volunteer group is aiming to safeguard the future of Brixton Recreation Centre by applying to give the community facility listed building status.

Brixton Rec Users Group is considering the move as an extra layer of protection for the Brixton Station Road landmark, which offers local residents gym and fitness studios plus the opportunity to take part in in badminton, basketball, fencing, football, swimming and table tennis sessions.

The users group issued a statement saying: “BRUG and Rec users fought off threats of its demolition in 2007 and 2012. Lambeth Council has committed £10m to developing the Rec. BRUG wants to ensure the future Rec remains a facility that users and the community want. Having the Rec listed might assist us in this.”

BRUG hopes that Heritage Lottery funding could be sourced to help with the listing status. The Rec has 76,000 visits each year – a figure the users group believes would gain a sympathetic hearing from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This money would be used to help fund the improvements the council has identified. In July, a Lambeth Council Cabinet report revealed that £6m of work is needed over the next 10 years to keep Brixton Rec open.
