Meet me in Battersea Park: what to see and do

Does any other park in London compare to Battersea when one considers the variety of attractions on offer? We'd say no. But then, admittedly, we're a little biased. 

There's something special about Battersea Park, but we're struggling to pinpoint what that something is. It's an open public space which appeals to people of all ages, local residents and visitors alike. Every time one visits, there's always something new to spot, something new to discover. If you're lucky enough to occupy one of the residences which overlook the park, we guarantee you'll never tire of the view – or your visits.

Mingle with the animals

A day's outing to Battersea Park Children's Zoo will bring those storybook animals to life for any young ones you have in tow. This menagerie consists of mammals, reptiles and birds. From the bearded dragon (lizard) and the ring-tailed lemur to the Bolivian squirrel monkey and the peach-faced lovebird, if spending time with animals is your plan of action for the day, who needs London Zoo when you have Battersea Park Children's Zoo?

Rendezvous at the Peace Pagoda

Where better to rendezvous than at the Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park?  The Greater London Council granted permission to erect the Peace Pagoda in what was the administrative body's final legislative act. It was completed in 1985. Whether meeting a friend or trying to locate an errant child, the pagoda provides the perfect meeting/remeeting point when in the park.

The Pump House Gallery, so-called because it inhabits a former Victorian pump house, celebrates all-things contemporary art. Since its opening in 1999, the venue has hosted a rotating programme of exhibitions and projects which focus on the contemporary visual arts. Boating on the lake

Sunny afternoons are rarer than we would like them to be, so when one does come along, seize it. What could be more fun or fulfilling than a row on Battersea Park's boating lake? The boating lake lies on the south side of Battersea Park, next to the ladies' pond, and pedal and rowing boats can be hired during the summer months.  

Get fit 

Joggers, walkers and cyclists flock to Battersea Park, whether it's a weekday or a weekend morning. A park like Battersea provides an antidote to life in a modern city - and you can boost your fitness levels. If it's sporting facilities you're after, the park's Millennium Arena boasts an eight-lane running track, a fitness studio, 19 tennis courts, multi-purpose playing surfaces, and grassed areas suitable for rugby or football.

Commune with nature

The Battersea Park Nature Areas Local Nature Reserve covers approximately three hectares and comprises a meadow and woodland. The habitat supports a variety of bird species and invertebrates, including butterfly. Whether you want to spend an afternoon spotting wildlife or simply steal a solitary moment of calm, this Nature Reserve is a gem.
