The Brixton Society - Understanding the Past, Looking to the Future
Wed 30 Apr 2025
The Brixton Society (registered charity number 1058103) organises events covering the whole of the Brixton area, from Stockwell to the South Circular, keen to cover a wide area of central Lambeth as well as the more commercial town centre. It aims to keep Brixton a great place to live and work in as well as providing a forum for the thoughts and discussions of its residents,
Members receive 4 newsletters a year and the Executive Committee meets eight times a year, with occasional open meetings on topics of interest to the local area.
In addition they host guided walks and stalls at local fairs to promote the Society at which they sell the only general history of Brixton available. They are also requested to give history talks at local schools and take enquiries from students and local enthusiasts, including people tracing their family history. Their Ebay shop also sells books, pamphlets and postcards showing the history of the area for anyone interested in how the area has been affected and changed through the years.
The Society plays an active part in several borough-wide and local organisations, including Brixton Neighbourhood Forum, Lambeth Local History Forum and the Lambeth Parks and Green Spaces Forum. It is also a member of the London Forum of Amenity and Civic Societies, making it a valuable source of information and interest for residents and historians.
Membership to the society costs £10 a year with some concessions available. For more details of membership and events please visit https://www.brixtonsociety.org.uk/
